Mimico Waterfront Park Final Phase Nears Completion

July 3, 2012, Toronto, ON—The second and final phase of Mimico Waterfront Park, 500 meters of a beautiful linear park in Etobicoke, is nearing completion. Soon residents and visitors to Toronto’s west end will be able to fully explore the waterfront from Superior Avenue East to Humber Bay Park West.

Construction of phase two started in July 2011 and today ninety per cent of lakefilling and shoreline protection for the new portion of the park is complete. Rough grading of the 500 metres of the new waterfront trail, which connects to the existing phase one trail, is also complete.

This summer, construction crews will complete work on lakefilling and shoreline protection at the eastern edge of the park, adjacent to Humber Bay Park West. A similar shoreline restoration and enhancement feature was incorporated into phase one of the project, which was opened to the public in 2008. The existing gazebo at Humber Bay will be lifted and relocated onto an already constructed concrete pad located few meters south from its current location. Crews will complete grading of the park’s multi-use trail that will provide park-users with access to the boardwalks and pockets of wetland habitat. Finally trees and shrubs will be planted and landscape lighting installed.

Mimico Waterfront Park has also created diverse ecosystems for terrestrial and aquatic organisms to thrive, and connects park-users in Etobicoke to the water’s edge trail and the rest of the waterfront. For the first time, park-users in the surrounding neighbourhoods were able to connect and explore nature along the waterfront. The new water’s edge park also contributes to a diverse, vibrant community.

Mimico Waterfront Park is a joint project between Waterfront Toronto and Toronto and Region Conservation. Phase two of the park is expected to be open in September.
