Peter Busby

Since merging his Vancouver-based firm with Perkins + Will in 2004, Peter has been a driving force across the organization, directing over 100 employees working on projects across Canada, the United States, Europe and the Middle East. Peter created the Sustainable Design Initiative, which provides a framework to make the firm a global leader in sustainable design. As SDI Advisor, Peter provides sustainable design leadership on all projects across the firm. A Board Member, Peter is deeply involved in the firm’s strategic focus and commitment to design excellence. Peter's globally recognized design work, which focuses on sustainable communities and regenerative design, spans market sectors and has been instrumental in the success of the firm’s West Coast offices.

As founder and recent Chair of the Canada Green Building Council, Peter initiated the development of LEED in Canada. An outspoken advocate, he has devoted much of his time to his profession, to the community, the development of public policy and the advancement of sustainable education and practices. In recognition of his professional and community contributions, Peter became a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada in 1997 and in 2005 Peter was invested as a member of the Governor General's Order of Canada, the country's highest civilian award that recognizes a lifetime of outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation.

Peter holds a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of British Columbia and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Philosophy from University of Toronto. In 2008, Peter was conferred an Honorary Doctorate in Science by Ryerson University and in 2011 was named a Cascadia Fellow. In 2013, he was elevated to LEED® Fellow, a designation of the US Green Building Council, which recognizes exceptional contributions to the green building community as well as significant achievements within a growing community of sustainable design professionals. Peter was the recipient of the 2014 Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) Gold Medal, an honor which recognizes a significant and lasting contribution to Canadian architecture. Peter’s latest book, titled, Busby: Architecture’s New Edges, was published in 2015.
