constructing queens quay

Construction is underway that will completely rebuild and revitalize Queens Quay both above and below ground.

The revitalization of Queens Quay is about much more than rebuilding the roadway. Waterfront Toronto is leading a coordinated construction effort that integrates improvements to the public realm with much needed infrastructure and utility upgrades. The goal is to avoid the need for construction in the near future by making these upgrades now.

what to expect

There will be changes in how the street (Bay St. to Yo Yo Ma Lane) operates during construction.

  • One way traffic on either the north or south side of the roadway – alternating between where crews are working.
  • TTC rerouting when the streetcar is out of service.
  • Temporary gangplanks for foot traffic while zones in front of stores are being rebuilt -- access to all storefronts will be maintained.
  • Fences around construction areas to maintain pedestrian and vehicular safety.
  • Construction noise as permitted by City bylaws.

how to access queens quay
by car

Traffic on Queens Quay is one-way westbound only between Bay St. and Dan Leckie Way. All north-south streets remain open and eastbound traffic has been rerouted to Lake Shore Blvd/Harbour St. Two travel lanes have been maintained although lane closures may be required in certain areas. One-way traffic will be maintained from Fall 2012 through Spring 2014.

by foot

Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times during all stages of construction. If temporary sidewalk detours are required, safe pedestrian passageways will be set up around the construction area.

by transit

The 509 Harbourfront replacement bus will continue to operate westbound on Queens Quay through the construction area serving all westbound stops (although stops may be moved slightly around the construction area). Eastbound buses will be diverted via Lake Shore Blvd/Harbour St. serving stops at Stadium Rd., Bathurst St., Dan Leckie Way, Lower Spadina Ave., Simcoe St., and Bay St. where buses will continue north to Union Station.

by bike

The detour bike route – an asphalt trail located in the boulevard area on the south side of Lake Shore between Lower Spadina Ave. and York St. – will enable cyclists to bypass most of the construction area. Cyclists may use this route for either eastbound or westbound travel. Please use caution if you choose to ride westbound with vehicular traffic through the Queens Quay construction area.
